Q. There are so many options available for the consumers that need a little extra assistance in weight management. Along with moderate diet and moderate exercise, what do you think offers the best assistance?
Is the DSHEA a proper organization?
Is the DSHEA a proper organization?
A. I had talked to my doctor a few times in regards to weight loss help and he has said repeatedly, that NOTHING over the counter helps with weight loss. He said that the company would be RICH if they really found one that works, and I believe him. Here are some herbs that are said to help. Take care.
Kelp
Kelp is a common herb used to stimulate weight loss and increase the amount of fat burned by the body. Kelp contains vitamins and minerals that supplement your body's ability to use the energy stored in fat. According to "One Earth," Kelp also contains iodine and potassium, components known to stimulate the thyroid and increase metabolism. Foods with iodine should be regulated because an overdose of iodine, especially a long-term overdose, can cause more thyroid problems.
Ephedra is a common weight-loss herb that serves as a powerful component in many herbal weight-loss formulas sold over the counter. Ephedra is also known as ma huang. Since the 1990s, ephedra has received media attention due to its tendency to increase the risk of seizures, strokes and heart attacks, especially in patients with high-blood pressure. Due to the risks involved, you should not take ephedra for weight loss without close supervision by a doctor and herbalist.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon bark is a gentle herb, a tasty option that is easy to include as a spice or dietary supplement to help you lose weight. Cinnamon acts as a diuretic to help you lose extra water that may cause you to retain weight. Cinnamon also causes your body to raise its temperature, which raises the body's metabolism and increases your ability to burn more fat. Cinnamon can also reduce your risk of insulin resistance, a condition that can indicate a high risk of diabetes. Cinnamon can easily be added to sauces, cakes and pies, but it is also available in weight-loss supplement teas and capsules if you aren't fond of the taste of cinnamon.

What cat diet is best for a multiple cat home?
Q. So I have two cats, one is morbidly obese, and the other one is where he should be weight wise. I tried a weight management cat food and instead of the cat that's overweight losing weight, the cat that's where he should be has started to lose weight. I started to give him some wet food as well to keep him from losing weight but the overweight cat still isn't losing any weight. Is there anything I can do?
A. Feed them in separate rooms twice a day and pull the food up between meal times. I do agree canned food is a good option for both cats. It's more like their natural diet - full of water and protein :) Otherwise a grain free dry food is the next best option. Diet foods are kind of scam. They're filled with cheap fillers to make the cat feel full but are not the most nutritionally sound foods. Good luck!
How long for cat to lose some weight on new diet?
Q. My cat weighs 16 pounds. She is a small cat and the vet said that it is crucial that she lose weight. His advice was to just feed her only twice a day, am and pm. She eats a weight management dry food and I measure a bit under 1/4 of a cup each feeding. The vet said that an average house cat eats about a half a cup a day so I should feed her just a hair less.
How long until I see results with her?
she is on a new food...a prescription, ristricted calorie, dry food that I buy from the vets office. Not a crappy food from the store.
I also know the dry food/wet food argument, I dont need to hear it again. Has nothing to do with my question.

A. Dry food is not going to take weight off your cat. It is still full of carbohydrates and that is what is fattening for a cat.
Go to : http://www.thepetcenter.com and read their excellent article on feline obesity. At http://littlebigcat.com Dr. Jean Hovfe has an article of Feline Obesity and one titled "The Right Weight Loss Program for Cats!".
It takes a long time to overcome the problem and you should not be worried that it doesn't happen right away. After six months of the right diet you will notice she is much trimmer and it will continue for another six months to lose several pounds. That's the best way to go.
Don't make your cat suffer by reducing the amount of food that has made her fat in the first place. A human doesn't diet by eating one piece of chocolate cake a day instead of two - wholesome and nutritionally satisfying food is the key.

What is a good food for my overweight golden?
Q. I have two Goldens. Both female. One is right at 67 lbs the other just over 80! I know, I know...not good. The bigger one is bossy to the smaller one over her getting near her bowl. Roxy, the bigger eats much faster and Maggie likes to munch. I have started taking their bowls up to keep Roxy from eating everything and taking them both for walks each day. I have been feeding them Beneful weight management. I have been reading on here that is not good to do. Feed them "diet" food that is. What is a good brand that I can feed both of my girls and how much should I be giving them? Should I feed them once or twice a day? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A. I don't believe that diet food is good for dogs - and Beneful is certainly not a good food.
Read this site:

to find a better food for your dogs. Even Nutro and Nutro-Max would be better than Beneful.
Also, never give your dogs a reason to fight. You're on the right track already in recognising that you can control their food source and pick up the bowls to avoid Roxy's resource guarding tendencies.
Feed them separately. I think that leaving Maggie's food down to "munch" is not good - take up her bowl if she does not eat it all within 2 minutes, and wait until next mealtime to try again. Dogs who are free-fed become overweight - additionally, you're sunk if you ever want to actually train your dog. So be prepared for sad puppy eyes, "I'm starving!" and even pathetic violins playing in sympathy for your poor, starved dog - stick to your guns and only feed her at mealtimes.
For your overweight dog, measure out her food for the day. Remove, say, 1/4 of it and replace that with carrots and green beans, or canned unsweetened pumpkin. See how she does - you don't want her to drop a lot of weight quickly, but you do want to be able to feel her ribcage easily. Overweight dogs have tremendous stress on their joints and other health problems - good for you for helping your dog to shed those pounds!
Good luck!
