How does birth control affect weight loss?

Q. I have been on a strict weight loss program. I eat generally healthy and go to the gym 5 to 6 times a week and about three times with a personal trainer.
However, soon I am planning on getting into birth control pills. I have been told that your hormones go crazy with the pills... Would this affect my weight loss? I know it reacts differently with each woman... but what are the possibilities?

Thanks in advance!

A. When I took them I didn't notice any significant weight gain or loss. I had a friend who gained 30 lbs, but she was about 100lbs to start, always been one of those bone skinny girls when she was younger. Other friends, maybe 10 lbs or so, but like I said if anything I might have gained 5 lbs. I think its because the hormones affect your appetite, making you hungrier more often, but as long as you pay attention to that and keep doing what you're doing you'll be fine.

Does someone knows about a good weight loss program at a clinic or hospital in the Boston Area?
Q. Does someone knows about a good weight loss program at a clinic or hospital in the Boston Area?

A. You have one of the finest hospitals in the country in Boston: Brigham and Women's. If you call there, they may have such a program, or be able to refer you.

Having said that, weight loss is under your control. It is ALL about calories taken in vs. calories burned. If you eat more than your body needs, you'll gain weight. If you eat less, you'll lose weight. And you are probably taking in far more calories than you realize simply by snacking. By adjusting your meals to wholesome, filling foods without empty calories such as gravies and sauces, and then eliminating ALL snacking and "treats" such as dessert, candy, sweets, etc., you will lose weight at a sensible rate over time. Meanwhile, get out and move. Walk around the block a few times every single day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. For short trips, walk, don't ride. If you do these simple things to modify your daily behavior, you'll lose weight. No question about it.

How do I calculate body mass index for women?
Q. I've searched all over the internet and asked all my friends but I haven't found a definitive answer. If weight loss techniques are different for men and women, then they must have different formulas for bmi, right?

Also, please recommend a good weight loss program, something that will work for a recently pregnant mom. Thank you.

A. Hi Becky

The BMI calculation is Weight in KG/Height in Meters Squared & makes no allowances for males & females, however the Navy's body fat percentage formula does adding a hip measurement for females
