How can you measure weight loss and body fat loss?

Q. We have a contest going at work, sort of like Biggest Loser. Six women, four of them between 154-180 lbs and two of them between 250-300 lbs. What is a fair way to make the contest without giving advantage to heavier women? If we have a set weight loss then it wouldn't be fair because fatter people lose weight faster and easier, but if we do it as a percentage it would kind of be the same thing.
resources or ideas?

A. Body fat loss is the same problem as weight loss - those who only have a little to lose are going to have a lot worse of a time.

Percentage of your total weight would be the best. Then someone who weighs 300lbs would have to lose 2lbs for it to be equivalent to the woman weighing 150lbs losing 1lb.

Have you considered teams and not individual winners? A bit of competition to help motivate you is great, but having two teams of 3 means each person has 2 other people really rooting for them to lose the weight and helping them stick to it. I think % loss of weight for the whole group would even it out a bit (between the smaller and larger women trying to lose weight), and yet keep it competitive and make sure both teams have a fair chance of winning.

How do I tell a new friend that I'm having weight loss surgery?
Q. I am having weight loss surgery next month and I recently started seeing someone. I'm not really sure how to tell him or whether I really need to tell him. I'm not really sure where our relationship is going and it's not like I will be able to "hide" it. Just wondering if I should say anything and if so how do I bring it up in a conversation.

A. If you think that this relationship will last, the conversation will inevitably come up... either during your surgery and recovery or when the weight starts coming off. Since your diet will change significantly (what you eat, how you eat and how much you eat at each meal), you will not be able to avoid questions from a significant other.

A good way to begin the conversation may be something like, "I have made a decision that is going to greatly affect my life and I want to share it with you."

You can then proceed to discuss:
* Why you decided to have the surgery (health and emotional reasons, but focusing on the health reasons often makes it "hit home" with someone who's unfamiliar with the benefits of surgery)
* What it will mean to your day to day life (i.e. diet changes... despite what many think, bariatric surgery is not the "easy way out")
* The support that you will need from those around you, especially as it relates to diet and exercise. The last thing you want is for your partner to tempt you with things that may be harmful such as sweets or unhealthy food. If they understand the implications, they'll be more likely to be a positive influence rather than pulling you in the other direction.

After having the conversation, refer him to a resource where he can learn more about weight loss surgery, including the research that supports it, the health conditions it improves and what life is like for patients afterward. These 2 pages are good places for him to start:
* http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/bariatric-treatment.html (Bariatric treatment overview)
* http://www.bariatric-surgery-source.com/life-after-weight-loss-surgery.html (Life after weight loss surgery)

If he's a "keeper", he'll understand and support you!
