Has Hot and Sour soup ever been shown to cause weight loss?

Q. I ate it once a day all last week and I lost 4 lbs. Has anyone ever known it to be a weight loss secret / tool ?

A. I am not aware of any studies on it, but it is a known low-calorie soup with tofu, which is healthy protein, and I think vinegar, which is supposed to help your body process blood sugar. Warm liquid also helps your stomach relax and feel fuller. Some dietitians recommend eating a bowl of warm soup each day for general health.

What type of exercising machine works better for weight loss?
Q. Even though I wouldn't mind building up some muscle, my main objective is fast weight loss. Which of the exercising tools are best - treadmill or elliptical or cycling machine?
Thanks!

A. Of the three the treadmill would probably be the better, but it would depend on your speed(s). Here is a quick breakdown from livestrong.com.

Walking and Running
About 15 calories per minute are burned running a nine-minute mile (450 cal for 30min). Walking at a 15-minute mile pace burns only about six calories per minute (180 cal for 30min). Walking faster than a 13-minute mile (approximately 4.6 mph on the treadmill) burns more calories. Pumping your arms and seeking out inclines adds more calorie burn to your walk, as does incorporating jogging intervals.
Cycling
A leisurely ride burns about 250 calories in a half hour. A competitive cyclist going all out may expect to burn 400 in a half hour. A spin class burns approximately 450 in an hour long session.
Elliptical
A popular machine at the gym that combines the stride of running with the bio-mechanics of stair stepping, the elliptical provides a decent calorie burn with no impact. It's possible to burn about 250 calories in a half hour--slightly more if you choose an elliptical with arm poles.

Jumping Rope only 290 cal in 30min at a moderate to fast pace.

What is the best free online food diary, fitness journal, etc.?
Q. I know some magazines and online communities offer great weight loss tools - do you know of any?

A. If you have the time, Fit Day is great because it calculates the nutritional value of the food you consume. This way you know that you're not sacrificing on nutrients as you try to cut calories.

Good luck! :)

Where can I find free online weight loss tools?
Q. My friends keep telling me about online weight loss planners but they are all members at websites with monthly subscription fees.

A. Have you tried projectweightloss.com? Its a great weight loss site, and its free. Its got menu and workout planners, and a calorie counter that lets you calculate how many calories you eat, and then how many you burn when you work out. You can calculate how many calories you need to eat daily to reach your target weight, and the program tells you if youre over or under your calorie target. Plus, its got really nice graphs Ive been using it for a couple of months and I love it!
