Q. I need to lose 70 lbs and have lost 12 so far the old fashioned way by diet and exercise. It's going very slow even though I have dropped sugar, dairy and all processed food. I brisk walk an hour everyday and drink lots of water. What else can I do to speed this up?
A. Dance. There's fairly good evidence that not only does it burn calories and most people are more willing to keep it up compared to gym-type exercise, but it delays loss in mental acuity, helps prevent falls and increases bone density in hips and legs. Ballroom dancing, tap, belly dance, etc...
I am 13 and overweight, what are some ways to lose weight?
Q. I am 13, 5'4" and about 190 pounds. I would really appreciate some weight loss tips.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

A. The only way I've ever been able to lose weight is to keep a food journal, write down everything you eat and drink every day. Jot down the number of calories from packaged foods and drinks, you might be surprised what is (or isn't!) fattening.
Don't "diet" but instead try to figure out what you will be happy eating long term that is good for you. People who are able to keep weight off don't usually follow an exact diet they read in a book, but instead figure out what works for them as individuals (I read that in a Consumer Reports article reviewing various commercially marketed diets). You can use a particular diet as a starting point, if that helps you, and then charge it to fit what you like.
The first week keeping a journal, don't make any goals, just get an idea how much you are currently eating. Then start to set small goals one at a time, like reducing the number of snacks, eating smaller portions. If a particular kind of food seems to be your weakness, try to find lower calorie alternatives you like just as well, or if you can't, you might want to limit the number of servings per week. You can also set goals like trying a healthy food you've never had before. But be gradual when you set goals. Don't try to do too much at once, and don't get down on yourself if you don't meet a goal.
It does help to increase exercise. But whenever I try to stick with some list of exercises, I always let it slide eventually. So that never worked for me. It helps to find something active you do for fun, or it is just part of daily living, that you don't think of it as exercise.
Most important, it's about health, not weight. Many young women are way too thin, which is harder on your body than being overweight. Taking care of yourself may not seem important now, but when you get older, the better care you take of yourself when you're young, can pay off by giving you a better quality of life. Eat good food, relax and don't get too stressed, find activities you really enjoy, have fun.

I'm very thin, but have cellulite, what can I do to reduce the appearance?

I am very thin, but my arms and thighs have cellulite.
I know that cellulite never completely goes away, but are there any exercise / diet suggestions on how to reduce the appearance?

A. Step 1
To reduce cellulite, drink water. Aim for a least 2 liters a day. This will help to flush out toxins and help your body regulate better, reducing cellulite.
Step 2
Exercise to reduce cellulite. Even a little bit of exercise everyday will help, but try and work in some vigorous exercise for better results. Losing weight can help reduce cellulite.
Step 3
Make changes in your diet to reduce cellulite. A cellulite diet consists of reducing fat, sugar and calorie intake and focusing on foods that contain anti cellulite ingredients, packed with anti-oxidant power such as:
*Asparagus
*Avocadoa
*Bananas
*Beans
*Berries
*Bran and Oat Cereal are an excellent source of energy, high in fiber and antioxidants.
*Broccoli
*Citrus Fruits
*Nuts
*Oily Fish:Salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, herrings, mackerel and bass
*Onions
*Pears
*Pineapple
*Watermelon
Include as much of these types of food into a balanced diet to reduce cellulite.
As part of your anti-cellulite diet, eat more protein and fiber. protein helps to firm up muscles that can keep fat stores in place and reduce the dimpled effect of cellulite.
Eat approximately .6 gram per pound of lean body mass if you are a moderately active person, and 1 gram per pound of lean body mass if you are very active. Opt for lean protein in fish, especially salmon because fish provides a high dose of essential fatty acids.
Step 4
Help get rid of cellulite by taking your vitamins. Add the following vitamins to your diet to help lose cellulite:
Calcium : To reduce body fat
Gamma linoleic acid: Helps burn more calories
Potassium : Helps combat fluid retention
Iodine: Helps stimulate a slow metabolism
Lycopene: A vital antioxidant
Magnesium: Helps fight stress and is associated with weight management
Selenium: Improves the action of vitamins C & E and beta carotene
Sulphur : Reduces free-radical damage
Vitamin B6: Excellent fluid fighter
Vitamin C: Powerful detoxifier and helps strengthen skin
Vitamin E: Improves circulation and is essential for healthy skin
Essential Fatty Acids. Take a fish oil or flaxseed supplement which can improve skin texture and tone within 2 months of use.
Step 5
Supplement you cellulite diet with antioxidants that can help you reduce cellulite. The best antioxidants for fighting cellulite include: juniper berries, peppermint tea, grape seed bioflavonoids, co-enzyme Q-10, black pepper extract, white pepper, cinnamon root extract, onion, cloves, garlic and ginger.
Green Tea is also a great antioxidant that has been shown to increase the rate your body burns calories and can help you lose cellulite.
Step 6
Get professional help. See an Endermologist. The FDA has approved Endermologie as an effective solution for temporary reduction of cellulite. You start with 14-18 treatments 1-2 times weekly, with monthly visits for maintenance. Endermologie involves a massage machine with 2 rollers and some gentle suction action. Another option is to get a weekly massage and have them put extra focus on your problem areas.
Step 7
Try body brushing to reduce cellulite. Buy a bristle body brush and use it everyday before you shower. Begin at your feet and make deep, long strokes towards your heart, with extra focus on the problem areas. This exfoliates and improves circulation, which helps with the appearance of cellulite.
Step 8
Above all, embrace and love the body you have. Take care of it the best you can and don't worry if you have a few dimples on your butt. Women are much more aware of cellulite than guys. A lot of men don't even know what cellulite is. Some guys even think that they are just cute dimples -God bless them!

What is the best vitamin supplement for women?
Q. I am working out six days a week and eating healthy, but I am looking for the right supplement to aid to my weight loss.
A. I like New Chapter. They are food based and their processing preserves much of the nutrients. They also don't pack a ton of cellulose in there, which makes it difficult for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients.
My second most favorite vitamin is made by Rainbow Light.
As far as weight loss goes, here are some tips, but you may already be doing these.
- Eat 3 hours or more before going to bed
- Don't push your workouts too hard. Over training the body can lead to an increase in cortisol, which can result in fat accumulation in the mid section.
- Eat plenty of vegetables. When you are hungry for a snack reach for a veggie!
- Get at least 8 hours of sleep. This is also related to cortisol.
- Eat ample protein, but not in excess. A general rule is your body weight in kg (lbs/2.2=kg) x 0.08= # grams of protein to eat daily.
- Be sure to weight train and hit the cardio.
Of course, if any of this goes against what a doctor has told you then you should listen to your doctor first.
Hope this helps! And good luck on your way to sexy!
In regards to vitamins not helping you lose weight:
Many vitamins participate as co-enzymes in body and help to metabolize fat. For example, if you wish to burn fat you absolutely need niacin and riboflavin to be able to do this. Vitamins E and C act as antioxidants and fight free radicals. When we exercise we create free radicals, so these are also important. It is also recommended that women take 400mcg of folate every day and take in extra calcium because we don't necessarily get everything we need from our food. Ideally, if you eat a perfect diet you would get all your nutrients, but you'd also need to have ideal absorption as well. Of course, you can not take vitamins alone and expect to lose weight, but they will help you in attaining optimal health if they are part of an overall healthy lifestyle (diet and exercise).
